What Taylor Swift does, she does exceedingly well. I am sure that she does not cry herself to sleep every night because she may not do justice to Puccini or Verdi. Nor, I imagine, does Matt Damon chastise himself because he can’t star in Richard the Third.
No matter how talented someone is, there is always a limit to their particular skills. Certainly, some actors, for example, have a wider range than others. But even the best have areas that are just not a great fit. And it doesn’t actually matter.
You do the best you can, if you can, when you can. It’s when you stop trying to reach your personal potential—whatever it is—that is the killer; not the soul destroying wasted attempts to be Mozart or Shakespeare.
So for your next ad, blog, graphic, or whatever, the goal is simply to do the best you can. And if that sounds like fortune cookie advice, well, I hope the fortune cookie writer doesn’t waste time wishing he were Stephen King.
