There is a building directory like the one above in virtually every one of the thousands of office buildings in New York. And hundreds of thousands of other listings in office buildings across the country.
Though I have blurred the names in the interest of privacy, a business or service like yours is probably listed there. So while the title of today’s post overstates the amount of competition you have, it should get you thinking. And perhaps make you a little nervous.
How can you make your business stand out from the others? (I don’t mean on the directory itself, using bigger letters or LED lighting. By then it is probably too late.) If your prospects feel you are the same as the others on the list, then you are a commodity that can only compete on price, or the me-too promise of superior service. And to trying to convince people you are a “better” choice takes a bigger budget than you may have.
Perhaps the best route is figuring out how you are different than the others, and getting that message out. Come up with a good idea and you’ll be thrilled by how many more people will get off on your floor.
